Lifestyle Choices to Help Reduce Chronic Pain
It's September. School has started. The slow days of summer are gone. There's more traffic, longer lines, more errands, more work. Life seems more hectic, busier. Your stress levels have increased and so has your pain. I don’t have to tell you that chronic pain and stress are linked. It’s a circular relationship: pain causes tension in the body, the tension exacerbates the pain and so on and so on. One amplifies the other. It makes sense.
Stress is your body’s way of warning you that there is potential harm. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that you have been harmed and you need to be on the lookout to prevent more.
You can see the connection between the two when you recognize that pain and stress present with similar physical symptoms. When you are in pain or when you are stressed, your muscles tighten, your blood pressure and your heart rate increase, and your breathing becomes shallow. Your entire body is in a state of high alert.
So eliminating stress can help alleviate your chronic pain. Easier said than done, right?
